Gayle becomes first player to hit 300 sixes in Indian T20 League

Chris Gayle has become the first cricketer in Indian T20 League history to smash 300 sixes. The leading six-hitter in the league had needed just two more to reach the 300-run mark before the clash against Mumbai in Mohali.

The West Indian legend smashed Mitchell McClenaghan for the second six to reach the magical mark. Next best in the list is AB de Villiers with 192 sixes in 143 games.

Gayle has been in superb form with the bat this season, having smashed 79 in the first match against Rajasthan. During that knock, he had had also become the fastest player to reach 4000 runs in the league.

Before the start of the Punjab-Mumbai game, Gayle had amassed 4093 runs from 114 matches at an average of 41.34 with six hundreds and 25 half-centuries.

It comes as no surprise that Gayle's teammates and in particular his opening partner KL Rahul are in awe of his prowess.

"He's somebody who's just been so destructive. It's so important to have somebody that destructive and to have someone with that kind of talent and experience. That whole package is the best for a team to have," Rahul had told India Today.

"A lot of players in the IPL are destructive but they don't have that kind of experience and don't know how to use it but to have Chris, who has played so much cricket around the world... To have somebody like that is so useful to the youngsters and for me to just learn from him and pick his brains on how he has carried on his cricket for the last 15-20 years," Rahul added.

It now remains to be seen if Gayle has enough power to take the Punjab team to its maiden Indian T20 League title.
